Santo Tomás Church in Abiquiú

We met a man born Abiquiú  returning after fifty years with his wife.  His father attended the church.  The parishioners practice self-flagellation but when this man saw marks on his father's back as a young child, his father told him he had been "attacked by a bear".  It's only when he was older that he learned of the practice and why his father had those marks on his back.  He also should us pictures of his family home and a home his grandfather and great uncle built.  Both adobe houses both stand today though both are abandoned.
Here's a story of interest about people of Genízaro family origins returning to find roots.     https://www.mprnews.org/story/2016/12/30/npr-descendants-of-native-american-slaves-in-new-mexico-emerge-from-obscurity
